Using separate VOIP Device with DECT Capable Fritz!Box
daksol
FYI - XS4ALL customers who use a separate VOIP device.

Making this available here, I suspect a regularly asked question.

There is a long standing issue for XS4ALL customers who want to use VOIP devices with a DECT capable Fritz!Box. Such Fritz!Box units are configured to use the standard port 5060 to connect the VOIP to the DECT. This is a problem for any users who want to use a separate VOIP device - since the Fritz!Box will not let you forward port 5060.

Typical VOIP devices would include:-

There are two solutions to this problem - select the one which works with the version of FritzOS on your unit.

====================================

FritzOS 6.35 and later
  • From this version of FritzOS it is no longer possible to connect to the unit via Telnet. See knoweledge base Access to the FRITZ!Box via Telnet is not supported at https://en.avm.de/service/fritzbox/fr...supported/
  • For these units the procedure is described in detail in knowledge base Using an IP telephone or internet telephony software with the FRITZ!Box https://en.avm.de/service/fritzbox/fr...FRITZ-Box/
  • If you remove all phone numbers configured into the Telephony section of the Fritz!Box then the OS now allows you to port forward 5060 to another device.

====================================

Earlier versions of FritzOS (before 6.35)
  • FritzOS is a Linux like operating system. You connect to the box and update a configuration file.
  • Description of how to update the unit via Telnet https://www.3cx.com/blog/docs/change-...-fritzbox/
  • In brief
  • ***Take a backup of your Fritz!Box configuration
  • ***Enable Telnet temporarily
  • ******Temporarily pair a DECT Handset as phone #1
  • ******Enable access to the FritzBox via Telnet by dialling #96*7*
  • ******wait for 3 seconds and hang up the phone to open port 23 (telnet)
  • ******(You can disable telnet by following the above steps and dialing #96*8*)
  • ***Connect to the Fritz!Box with Telnet (eg from Putty, by using a Linux terminal)
  • ***Edit the config file at /var/flash/ar7.cfg - it may be easier to copy the file to your workstation, edit it and copy it back
  • ***Update the various locations which include "5060" as a port number, particularly sections:- voip_forwardrules, voip_ip6_forwardrules. Change 5060 to some other value, like 5061
  • ***Save file, log off Telnet, restart Fritz!Box
  • ***You can de-activate Telnet as described above
  • ***Confidently live with the ominous text which appears in the status page on the GUI "changes not supported by manufacturer:"
  • ***Configure routing of port 5060 to your VOIP device
