Draytek Vigor 167 DSL Modem - info and cautions
daksol
On this forum one of the users suggested to me that the Draytek Vigor 165 was a good choice to provide "DSL Modem only" type functionality.

I ordered a DV165 but was advised by the supplier (CallVOIP in Grongingen) that the DV165 was out of stock, and possibly will no be produced any more. I heard later that manufacturing problems with the DV165 linked to the (un)availability of certain chips.

So I agreed with supplier that they send me a Draytek Vigor 167 instead, price almost the same. Spec on Draytek.nl website: https://www.draytek.nl/producten/vdsl...=overzicht. German website mentions the future firmware, NL site does not from what I can see https://www.draytek.de/vigor167.html

Caution! the DV167 has some issues wrt documentation and minor quality probs
  • There is no quickstart guide or user manual
  • The Firmware (v5) has configuration webforms which look nothing like those for the DV165 (and earlier) which are shown in most how-to guides I have found.
  • It turns out that the initial batch of DV167 are only capable of operating in "DSL Modem only" mode. It is planned (as I understand) for a later release of firmware provide the additional functionality.
  • Current firmware (v5) has errors and omissions - not possible to set time zone in conventional way (does not understand CET vs CEST). no link to manufacturer for product registration.

I raised tickets with Draytek via their website. Response was pretty lame, I thought - saying that because this only operates in a single mode you don't need a user-manual. The people at CallVOIP were more helpful and gave me some tips - and explained that the specification of this new unit was a bit of surprise to them as well!

I did manage to get it operational. My experience with this sort of networking kit was limited to integrated Modem/Routers like the FritzBox; this setup with a dedicated DSL modem is different With the legacy Fritzbox all the configs are done on that one unit via the Fritzbox's web GUI. But with this DSL Modem only unit, and separate router there are some configs in the DSL Modem, and others in another device capable of being a PPPOE client (like a pfSense box, and I am sure many others). This table indicates the main ones I cam across.

BoxConfigurations
DV167 DSL ModemDSL Mode (ADSL, VDSL2, etc), Annex number, VLAN tags and priorities
pfSense RouterPPPOE client config including ISP service userid and password, MTU, WAN port nbr, firewall rules

But let me highlight a new feature with this unit. In previous blog posts etc I saw that there was an issue with gaining access to the DSL Modem device after it was in service. Some described some somewhat complex additional VLAN configurations to achieve that. Well with the DV167 that is now easy-peasy. I configured the DV167 with a fixed IP address within my home LAN range. Later, once it was operational with DV167 port P1 taking the WAN traffic, I connected another ethernet cable from the DV167 port P2 to my internal LAN switch (basic, not managed). And that allows you to log on as admin to the DV167 whilst it is in use.
